Sure, decks are just dots of ink printed on cards. But from that starting point our brain ‘sees images’ and our subconscious makes associations…. are we tapping into personal history, genetic history, angels, Jung’s Collective Unconscious or the Akashic Records? Are those unique things or all just parts of something more?
I do not believe in fate or destiny in the sense that the future is predetermined. However, we are creatures of habit, influenced by our personal & cultural histories and our biology; with varying levels of self-awareness. So can we really exercise ‘free will‘?
Human creatures find comfort, and safety, in understanding and labeling everything in our reality. But becoming fundamentalist in those labels, violent in upholding them, prevents growth. So I have thoughts on what the ‘truth’ of all this ‘woo woo stuff’ is, but I know that I don’t know, and I mistrust anyone who says they “know for sure“.
I’m comfortable using much of the current terminology of “this deck’s energy is__” without specifically assigning the source to the artist, myself, or something else. Perhaps I should instead say “when I use this deck I feel a __ energy.“. And if the energy makes me uncomfortable I should see if I’m the source and if there’s something for me to work on.
Otherwise, it’s just part of the Great Mystery.
Some describe it as “intuition” while others say “muse“. Or maybe Dolly Parton had it right in her song ‘These Old Bones‘ that the magic is inside each of us. My view is that the so-called scientific method has limits and is only able to comprehend small parts of the totality of the Great Mystery. Quantum physics is just starting to grasp the truths behind ‘occult traditions’ that speak of vibrations and energy. So perhaps we’ll get some ‘explanations’ some day. Perhaps we won’t.
I also think of John Fugelsang (political comic) saying that, whatever the truth is of astrology, any practise that helps us consider patterns in our actions and thinking is probably not a bad thing.
